Collage
Background:
The world we perceive is a fragment of one moment in time, place, and our state of mind. The world shifts constantly, and what we see at a single point in time, quickly dissipates. The Fragmented View series is a representation of this phenomenon. The collages are built from segments of smaller collages that are then neatly arranged to present an organized view of the subject. My objective in organizing the artwork in this deliberate way is to capture the human struggle of trying to control a constantly shifting world while being limited to see only a small fraction of a bigger universe.
About the Process:
The process to compose the collages is very involved, as the pieces are built from many layers.
To begin, I prepare the material by painting the paper with watercolors in different shades and textures. Then, I sketch out a rough draft of each of the mini collages, and plans the arrangement. I describe this as putting together a giant puzzle.
Next, I cut out the shapes for each individual mini collage, assemble them, and glue each shape in it’s place to represent an aspect of the subject of the bigger collage. Finally, I organize the mini collages into a single big piece and adds ink details to create texture. Each piece takes me several weeks to complete.
I enjoy using bold colors and shapes in my artwork. I borrow a lot of ideas for shapes from nature, such as leaves, rocks, rain drops on glass, plants, and clouds. My favorite part is watching the audiences react emotionally to my artwork.
