ABOUT ALEX ROKITA

As a child, my family and I left Poland to escape communism. After a challenging journey through various countries, we settled in Rome, Italy, where I discovered my passion for art, aesthetics, balanced design, and bold colors. During my time in Rome, I would often spend endless hours strolling through historic churches and museums, admiring frescoes and masterpieces by Renaissance artists. Surrounded by art, I found inspiration to create my own.

My love for art continued in Canada, where I fell in love with watercolors and embraced collage. While experimenting with different watercolor techniques, colors, and shapes, I began to develop my unique style, creating illustrations for children’s books while completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto.

During my first visit to the United States, I had the opportunity to explore the Smithsonian Museum and was captivated by a quilt exhibit. This experience inspired me to develop a new technique, incorporating bold colors, unique patterns for texture, and whimsical shapes to achieve an ethereal effect. This became my favorite signature style, distinct from anything I had done before.

I have illustrated “Phoebe’s World,” written by Pam Yielding, a book for younger readers. I have also written and illustrated a philosophical book about love, called “Why Love”. My work has also been published in the Toronto Star’s kids section, and I have exhibited my art at Toronto City Hall, Marymount University, Live an Artful Life gallery in The Plains, VA, and at the National Botanic Garden in Chantilly VA.

I earned my Master’s Degree from Marymount University in Northern Virginia, where I now reside with my family. The joy and love I find in my daughters serve as the inspiration for my most recent collage work.
